"If you can meet with triumph and disaster, and treat those two impostors just the same." | In Kiplian fashion, members of the U.S. House touted an energy bill as 'historic' and economically destructive. After classic drama and stalling maneuvers, the bill eventually passed by a slim 7 votes; with 44 Democrats voting against. Read more...

Showing clarity of conviction, as well as the courage to act, POTUS Obama, flanked by Nobel laureates and others, signed an Executive Order and Presidential Memorandum reverse U.S. policy on stem cell research. As could predicted, his actions stirred a firestorm from Republican quarters, and opponents of embryo stem cells research. One Republican icon acting contrary to this sentiment was Nancy Reagan, who applauded Obama's actions.

The phone was ringing early in the West Wing today, and it wasn't the former Illinois governor calling either. It was Obama cabinet nominees calling to throw in their towels: Nancy Killefer first, and then stunningly Tom Daschle. Does this fit into the "Change has come to Washington" file?

Peace in the Middle East looms large amongst challenges facing every U.S. presidency in the last several decades. It has eluded every administration, and shows no signs of significant breakthrough or progress. At the very same time, it is probably an issue of which the public is very aware and yet grossly uninformed. What is the way forward from such an abyss? One heralded peace advocate offers a word on the matter...

At president Clinton's first inauguration, noted poet Maya Angelou was called on to frame the day with prose. Now Elizabeth Anderson has been tapped to do the same for Barack Obama. In the history of the presidential inauguration ceremony, only four poets have held such a honor. Anderson is a professor at Yale University, and gives heaping credit to the influence of Gwendolyn Brooks on her work.

He hit the American scene like a thunderclap, upended our politics, shattered decades of conventional wisdom and overcame centuries of the social pecking order. Understandably, you may be thinking Obama is on the cover for these big and flashy reasons: for ushering the country across a momentous symbolic line, for infusing our democracy with a new intensity of participation, for showing the world and ourselves that our most cherished myth — the one about boundless opportunity — has plenty of juice left in it

Race is a live wire. A place where millions of people vest self-identity, social alignment and political empowerment. On one hand its often equated with skin color, and other physical features; but at the same time its associated with ancestral lands. Is race a mere social fact, and thus an evolving thing as a social group (nation) evolves? Or is it something far more permanent and lasting?

Its been an edge of the chair issue, complete with principled debate- public versus private education-and spirited appeals by DC officials. The verdict is in. If you're the leader of Change in the world, then you've got to have your own radar and compass. Those addicted to status quo can not facilitate Change. President-Elect engaged his radar and compass, while fomenting considerable anger, in the handling of turncoat senator Joseph Lieberman. (Interesting note in the first three letters of his name.) While there were many calls for the senator's head, President-Elect decommissioned the guillotine this time around; setting up a first test of his ability to detect and direct with an eye toward Change and the future.

The Terminator reached out to the heavy lifting President-Elect, to address a California Climate Summit; where over 800 shaker-movers convened to strengthen a 'path to green'. During the most recent 60 Minutes interview, President-Elect is asked about drawing upon the model of the Depression era New Deal. His response was astute. He pointed out that a 21st century reality demands its own solutions, and not a super-imposed golden model from another time. Professor William Jones, of University of Wisconsin, offers some historical insights that can help an Obama administration fashion a New Deal for our time.

Maybe its a better idea, that as soon as the Nov. 4 election is held the transfer of power happens, and the Inauguration can follow as scheduled. That must be a wide spread sentiment being felt within the Beltway, and even amongst world leaders. Let's turn this page already. Though we've not even had the big party yet- the Inauguration, we're still called to 'watch duty'; to pay attention to machinations that are taking place on The Hill, and which will shape the world we live in. Here's a term for your Politulary (Poltical Vocabulary): midnight regulations. That's where one administration pushes through legislation right under the wire, just as they're turning over the keys. Clinton overturned only 9% of H.W.'s midnight regs. Dubyah overturned only 3% of Clinton's. What percentage of Dubyah's will Obama succeed in overturning? Hmmm.
